Scalar: Physical quantities which have only magnitude and no direction.
Vector: Quantities which have both magnitude as well as direction. Denoted by AB or a.
Position vector Let O(0,0,0) be the origin and P be a point in space having co-ordinates (x,y,z) with respect to the origin O. Then, the vector OP or r is called the position vector of the point P with respect to O.
Direction angles: α, β, γ (angles which r makes with +ve direction of coordinate axes)
Direction cosine :- cos α, cos β, cos γ (denoted by l, m, n)
Types of Vectors
- Zero Vector: A vector whose initial and terminal point are coincident i.e. magnitude is zero
- Unit Vector: A vector of unit length.
- Coinitial Vector: Two or more vectors having the same initial point.
- Collinear Vector: If two or more vectors are parallel to the same line , irrespective of their magnitudes and directions.
- Equal Vector: Vectors having equal magnitude and same direction.
- Negative of a Vector: Vectors having the same magnitude but opposite direction of given vector.
NOTE :- Vectors can be displaced parallely without changing magnitude & direction are called free vectors.
