Important Question of Class 12 Physics PYQ 2026

Question :

Briefly explain the two important processes that occur during the formation of a p-n junction.

Solution :

Explaining the two important process that occurs during formation of p-n junction.     1½ + 1½

Two important processes are in the formation of p-n junction.

(i) Diffusion
(ii) Drift

Diffusion:
During the formation of p-n junction, due to concentration gradient across p- and n-sides, holes diffuse from p-side to n-side (p → n) and electrons diffuse from n-side to p-side (n → p). This motion of charge carriers give rise to diffusion current across the junction.

Drift:
Due to the positive space charge region on n-side of the junction and negative space charge region on p-side of the junction, an electric field directed from positive charge towards negative charge develops. Due to this field an electron on p-side of junction moves to n-side and a hole on n-side of the junction moves to p-side. The motion of charge carriers due to the electric field is called drift and constitutes drift current.

Question :

A wire of length L is bent round into (i) a square coil having N turns and (ii) a circular coil having N turns. The coil in both cases is free to turn about a vertical axis coinciding with the plane of the coil, in a uniform, horizontal magnetic field and carry the same currents. Find the ratio of the maximum value of the torque acting on the square coil to that on the circular coil.

Solution :

Finding the ratio of maximum value of torque

Side of squarea=L4Na=\frac{L}{4N}a=4NL

Radius of circular coilr=L2πNr=\frac{L}{2\pi N}r=2πNL

Maximum torque,

τ=NIBA\tau = NIBAτ1τ2=NIBA1NIBA2\frac{\tau_1}{\tau_2} = \frac{NIBA_1}{NIBA_2}τ1τ2=A1A2\frac{\tau_1}{\tau_2} = \frac{A_1}{A_2}τ1τ2=(L4N)2π(L2πN)2\frac{\tau_1}{\tau_2} = \frac{\left(\dfrac{L}{4N}\right)^2} {\pi\left(\dfrac{L}{2\pi N}\right)^2}τ1τ2=π4\boxed{\frac{\tau_1}{\tau_2}=\frac{\pi}{4}}
